Absract: The paper addresses nonverbal and combined, or verbal-nonverbal, communicative taboos in different cultures. It focuses primarily on the examination of gesture taboos, which present prohibitions to people belonging to the given culture or social group to perform some body actions in particular communicative situations or domains and recommendations for people of another culture or social group to avoid performing these actions in the same situations and domains. The paper establishes some significant relations between gesture taboos and some parameters of communication such as type of culture, in which the taboo exists, the role that human body and some corporal objects play in the culture, features of the corporal object participating in the gesture production, etc. The systemic analysis and lexicographic representation of gesture taboos, the determination and fixation of contexts of their functioning in oral speech, and the description of situations and instruments, which might be used to violate taboos, provide the essential improvement of verbal and gestural explanatory dictionaries.
