The History of Russian Formalism as a Provincial-Newspaper Literary Fact. Article I “The Hamburg Account” Against the Background of “Kiev’s Thought”

Absract: The article offers a fundamentally new approach to the history of Russian formalism and genesis of V.B. Shklovsky’sThe article offers a fundamentally new approach to the history of Russian formalism and genesis of V.B. Shklovsky’stheoretical ideas. The author discovers sources of the most important concepts, such as the “Hamburg score”, storyand plot, etc. in Russian southern newspapers the “Kievʼs Thought” and so on, in texts by D.I. Zaslavsky, andothers. A traditional interpretation of the concept the “Hamburg score” goes back to the stories of V.B. Shklovskyhimself about some closed fights of circus wrestlers. These stories are no longer to be found, up to our time. Asone of such possible sources, the article’s author suggests to consider a book by Larisa Reisner on the revolutionaryevents in Hamburg. This book V.B. Shklovsky analyzed in the “Hamburg Account” in detail.
