Georgy Ivanov’s Personality and Work in Igor Melamed’s Reception

Absract: In this article the author demonstrates, that G. Ivanov’s influence on I. Melamed’s poetics was very pronounced. Melamed’s poetry has not been thoroughly scrutinized yet. The impact of G. Ivanov’s works is traceable not only in his lyrics (in lexical, metrical and motif quotes), but also in his essays and articles. Melamed often appeals to the experience of the poet of the Russian émigré community and values him on a par with A. Pushkin. For Melamed, G. Ivanov became a creator of an accomplished poetry, the harmony of which testifies to God’s existence, despite the existential notes in his poetic voice and despite the feeling of God-forsakenness, which penetrates all his late works. Physiological poetics of lyrics by I. Melamed, who suffered a vertebral injury in 1999, places them in close quarters with “Posthumous Diary”. Although the apocalyptic mental outlook of G. Ivanov was mostly determined by tragic sinuosity of the first half of the 20th century, whereas the spirit of I. Melamed’s lyrics is explained by the events of his private life, their artistic systems seem to be in unison and might be considered as an instance of a dialogue across time within the Russian poetry of the 20th century.
