Absract: Most of the stories by A.V. Chayanov are written in the mode of a romantic fantasy. However, it is not always easy to answer the question, what is the author's major technique – is it stylization or is it a genre transformation, a genre update? The article presents an analysis of the novella by A.V. Chayanov “Venediktov, or memorable events of my life”; the results of the analysis are compared with the main constant features of a fantastic romantic story and the following conclusions are drawn: firstly, in “Venediktov...” there is a noticeable influence of a non-canonical ballad (the absence of a clear demarcation of “one's own” and “of an alien” world, counterpoint); secondly, the special relationship of these worlds; thirdly, the depersonalization of the infernal world and its occupancy; fourth, the urbanization of space and the strengthening of existential fear and horror. Thus, despite the obvious signs of stylization (the headings, outline and overall structure), the analyzed story should nevertheless be attributed to a new (neo-romantic) stage in the development of the romantic fantasy genre.Alexander V.
