Absract: This extended note enlarges upon a specific poetic form in Shakespeare – the shared sonnet as inset poem. In “Love’s Labour’s Lost” such a dialogue is conducted by King Ferdinand of Navarre and the Princess of France (act 5, sc. 2); in “Romeo and Juliet” – by the heroes of the title (act 1, sc. 5). Our comparison of the two passages helps to see how Shakespeare fitted the form and content of the shared sonnet to the meaning of a certain scene. This piece is written to commemorate Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary.
Keywords: Shakespeare, shared sonnet, double sonnet (one complete plus one interrupted), “Love’s Labour’s Lost”, “Romeo and Juliet”.
