Absract: The article considers the foreign musical reception of plots taken from the stories and novels of L. Tolstoy. The article traces the features of implementation of Tolstoy's works in different musical genres in national schools of Europe and the USA throughout the 20th century: in its early decades (F. Alfano, A. Roussel, L. Janáček,), the middle (B. Martinů, J. Cikker), at the end (I. Hamilton)
